LESSON 40
379 Dear Dr. Myers: From all indications, our conference at Interboro Institute on aptitude testing was an outstanding success. In my estimation, this success can be attributed directly to the excellent contributions of speakers like yourself.
Your address at the banquet on Friday, November 6, set an ideal tone for all the other meetings. In fact after your presentation yesterday, several members of our own faculty inquired whether they could obtain copies of it. Do you have any extra copies I can distribute to them?
I am sending you under another cover a copy of the New World Atlas as a token of our appreciation. I hope, Dr. Myers, that you have occasion to use it frequently and that it will remind you of the gratitude of Interboro Institute for your valuable contribution.
The next time you are in this area, please stop in to see us. Sincerely yours, [176]
380 Dear Mr. Samuels: When you lease a truck from the Empire Township Rental Company, you get more than an ordinary truck. You get everything you need for an exceedingly efficient distribution system. You get a new truck, maintenance, fuel, and insurance. Consequently, your only responsibility is to provide drivers.
Whenever you require a substitute vehicle, we will be glad to supply it. If you require emergency road service at any time, we will provide it.
If you are interested in leasing a truck for your business, return the enclosed card informing us when one of our experienced representatives may call. As I am sure you realize, your help. You have my sincere gratitude. Yours very truly.
381 Dear Mrs. Dix: Your letter asking the Strong Calculator Com-pany to contribute to your scholarship fund¹ was referred to me a few days ago by our Albany office. As you may be aware, we have of-fices all over the country. Conse-quently, we frequently receive re-quests for contributions to worthy and recognized charities. We wish we could contribute to all of them. You can readily see, though, that this would be impossible. We have decided to limit our contributions to causes that affect our home state of Illinois. It is my unpleasant duty, therefore, to report to you that we cannot contribute to your fund. We hope, Mrs. Dix, that you are successful in your endeavor to raise $100,000. Sincerely yours, [139]
382 382 Dear Mr. Mild: 1 N much trouble I caused you when I asked you to deliver our order for 201 calculators a month earlier than the delivery date we had agreed on. But on Wednesday, January 15,2 I received an urgent call from a difficult but important customer say-ing that he required 203 calculators for his advertising department in Detroit without delay. The calculators arrived on 4 Mon-day morning, and we delivered them to him on Tuesday. Because of your cooperation, we have been able to make him a satisfied customer, and we will unquestionably get more bus-iness from him in the future. I want to thank you, Mr. Mild, for your help. You have my sincere gra-titude. Yours very truly,
383 Ms. Smith: We are making progress in the preparation of the circular promoting our new publication, The Correspondence Manual. It should be completed shortly after the first of the year. It will be illustrated by Charles Brown, an acknowledged leader in the field of commercial art. It will be printed in four colors, which is something we have never done before.
We will mail the circulars in yellow envelopes. Both the circulars and the envelopes will be printed by Doyle Brothers, where we always get the advantage of special prices.
I think the circular will be an advertising piece that has character and pulling power. Consequently, it should bring in thousands of inquiries and orders. James B. Ryan [132]
384 Mr. Billings: Last Friday morning I interviewed two enterprising young women who, in my opinion, are excellent prospects for the sales positions we have available in the international division of Jennings Enterprises. I am enclosing their data sheets. You will notice that both of them meet our requirements completely, and I think they can make a definite contribution to our organization. Furthermore, they both speak German, French, and Spanish.
I suggest, Mr. Billings, that you study the data sheets carefully, and then invite the women to come in for an interview with you and with a member of the personnel department.
Let me have a report on these women as soon as possible. Harry L. Smith [135]
